Allocate Software is a leading international provider of workforce management software. Our application suite helps thousands of hospitals and healthcare organisations manage and optimise teams of nurses and doctors to improve patient care. We are a global company with 600 employees and offices in the UK, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, USA and Australia.

We are a fast growing technology company and are establishing a new software development centre in Skopje.

 

Producing software products to a high level of quality is crucial to our success as a company, particularly as our products are used by healthcare organisations. The company has decided to invest significantly in an exciting new Continuous Delivery initiative to improve quality and speed to market of our products.

 

Role Summary:

 

The Technical Author is responsible for the creation of high-quality release notes, user guides and quick-reference guides.

The successful applicant needs exemplary English language skills, including an in-depth knowledge of grammar and style, and must be able to explain complex ideas in simple ways.

We deliver our documentation in many different languages, so the successful applicant must be able to produce content that is easy to translate.

The successful applicant will work closely with the Global R&D team and other key stakeholders to ensure that our documentation meets the needs of our users in the UK and internationally.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Create high-quality release notes, user guides and quick-reference guides for all products in our HealthSuite.
  • Create documentation that meets four key criteria.
  1. Complete: Documentation is complete on time to meet the general availability dates.
  2. Accurate: Documentation accurately describes the enhancements of the product development teams in a customer-facing language.
  3. Consistent: Documentation is consistent with technical writing best practices and internal style guides.
  4. Clear: Documentation is simple and unambiguous to allow for easy translation in multiple languages.
  • Work on key documentation projects to ensure that we deliver a joined-up experience to all of our users.
  • Attend regular sprint reviews to monitor the development of our software and research content for our release notes.
  • Work with customer-facing teams to ensure that we meet the documentation needs of our customers.
  • Report to key stakeholders and manage their expectations effectively.

 

Skills/Qualifications/Experience Required:

Essential:

 

  • Exemplary language skills, including an understanding of the grammatical constructions that Technical Authors should avoid (like onion sentences and passive voice).
  • Experience writing specialist content for non-specialist audiences.
  • Ability to structure information logically.
  • Ability to give concise, unambiguous instructions.
  • High levels of accuracy in a clear, simple language.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar concepts quickly.
  • Excellent IT skills and a strong technical aptitude.

 

Desirable:

 

  • Experience of writing release notes, user guides, or both.
  • Experience working in the UK health industry.
  • Knowledge of Allocate Software products.
  • Experience with HATs (Help Authoring Tools) such as Flare, oXygen or similar.
  • Experience with CAT tools (Computer Aided Translation), such as Lingo, Trados, Passolo or similar.
  • Knowledge of technical writing best practices (like single-sourcing, multi-channel publishing and information modelling).
  • Experience producing content to be translated into different languages.
  • Knowledge of XML, HTML and CSS.
  • Experience of working with software engineering teams in a SCRUM or other agile environment.
  • Knowledge of DVCSs (Distributed Version Control Systems) such as Git.
  • Experience living or studying in an English-speaking country.

 

Interpersonal Requirements:

 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, online, over the phone, and in person.
  • Ability to work to deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to work with a global company.
  • Ability to work flexibly with multiple teams.

 

Education:

 

  • Degree in English language, linguistics or translation.
