We are seeking to hire a Logistics and Customs Compliance Specialist for one of our clients who is a Wholesale Food Company based in New York. This role will be responsible for managing the logistics of international shipments, ensuring compliance with customs regulations, and overseeing the import process from origin to the assigned distribution center in the U.S. The ideal candidate has a strong background in international logistics, importing, and customs requirements and thrives in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management desired or 7 years of work experience.
- 3+ years of experience in international logistics with a focus on ocean freight.
- Strong knowledge of import documents, shipping regulations, and customs requirements.
- Proven ability to operate with a high sense of urgency while remaining flexible, resourceful, and creative in solving logistics challenges.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced formulas (e.g., VLOOKUP) for data analysis.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Must have excellent proficiency in English, both written and spoken, with strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with international teams and handle professional correspondence.
- Experience working with customs brokers and freight forwarders. Familiarity with international trade agreements and regulations is a plus.
Responsibilities:
Logistics Coordination:
- Coordinate with international suppliers to ensure on-time departure of shipments.
- Work closely with freight forwarders, brokers, and customs officials to manage the flow of goods and ensure timely customs release.
- Oversee container trucking from port arrival to the distribution center, ensuring efficient and cost-effective transportation.
Customs Compliance:
- Prepare, review, and upload all necessary import documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists, and bills of lading.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant customs regulations, including accurate classification of goods using HTS codes.
- Verify the accuracy of duty rates and proactively monitor changes in import/customs regulations.
Cost Management:
- Audit logistics invoices for accuracy and research any discrepancies.
- Minimize costs associated with demurrage, detention, and chassis fees by proactively managing logistics timelines.
- Track and report on freight costs, identifying opportunities for cost savings and process improvements.
Data Management and Reporting:
- Accurately maintain logistics data within the company ERP system, ensuring all information is up-to-date and compliant.
- Generate and distribute reports on incoming freight, providing insights into logistics performance and cost analysis.
- Proficiently use Excel formulas (e.g., VLOOKUP) for data analysis and reporting.
Operational Support:
- Support the Supply Chain team by ensuring the efficient transportation of products to your assigned distribution center.
- Provide support outside of standard EST business hours for container deliveries, as needed.
- Collaborating closely with team members and external partners.
